Smokin. Hot.
That's raku, one of the most exciting techniques for finishing works in clay. Red hot pieces are removed from the kiln and then immediately plunged in water or smothered in straw. The results are spontaneous and often spectacular — the quick cooling and slow smoldering create surfaces with all the elemental power and nuance of fire.
